Governor's Awards at the 30th Anniversary Conference - October
3rd 2003

Governor Pataki was the featured speaker at the
30th Anniversary Conference and was warmly welcomed by all in attendance.
The Governor spoke of his love of the Adirondack Park and the continued
commitment of his administration to protect the natural resources,
work with Adirondackers in their communities and grow the Park economy.
The Governor presented awards to three distinguished
New Yorkers in recognition of their outstanding contributions to
the Adirondack Park. Governor Pataki said “Throughout New
York State’s history, the stewardship of the Adirondacks has
been guided by dedicated leaders who have helped protect and enhance
the environment, economy and communities of the Adirondacks. It
is a pleasure to present awards to Mr. Clarence Petty, Senator Ronald
Stafford and Mr. John Dillon to express the gratitude of a thankful
State for helping to manage and preserve the Adirondack Park for
future generations.”
The Governor proclaimed October 3, 2003 as Adirondack
Park Day to mark this momentous occasion.

Clarence Petty received the Governor’s award
for contributions made to the environment as a tireless advocate
for the Park’s wilderness and because of lifelong work in
protecting and enhancing the environment of the Adirondacks. Upon
presenting the award Governor Pataki asked Mr. Petty to say a few
words. Mr. Petty the former pilot, forest ranger, guide and APA
staffer said “Looking forward we need to remember that the
forest preserve is the engine that drives economy of the Park. As
long as we continue to preserve it, they will continue to come.”

Senator Ronald B. Stafford received the Governor’s
award for contributions made to improve the lives of the people
of the Adirondack Park. The Senator’s work ethic and vigorous
representation on behalf of North Country residents is legendary.
The Senator made a simple but profound statement with regard to
the future of the Adirondack Park and its residents. Stafford said,
“I would ask we work hard and always keep in mind to listen,
to listen to each other.”

John T. Dillon, Chairman & CEO of International
Paper (IP) received the Governor’s award for contributions
made to the economy of the Adirondack Park. At IP, Mr. Dillon helped
expand and strengthen the company’s position as a global leader
in the paper and forest products industry. An Adirondack native,
Mr. Dillion stressed the importance of a vibrant and sustainable
forest products industry for the future of the Adirondack Park.
