SPECIAL PRESENTATION (9:00 AM 10:15 AM) (Full Meeting Room)
Presentation and Panel Discussion: Night Lighting from an Environmental and Economic Perspective (D. Spada/S. Erman)
The presentation and panel discussion will focus on the visual quality of the night sky, the impact of street lighting and other lighting systems, and control technologies. The potential for a specific economic improvement project, the proposed observatory in Tupper Lake, will be discussed since it is highly dependent on the maintenance of a night sky absent significant light pollution. Speakers will include: Dr. Aileen A. O'Donoghue, Associate Professor of Physics, St. Lawrence University and Board Member of the Adirondack Public Observatory, Inc.; Marc Staves, President and Co-founder of Adirondack Public Observatory, Inc. and a staff person of the Tupper Lake Municipal Power Company; and Dr. Jan Wojcik, Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences and Director, the Reynolds Observatory, Clarkson University.
