Description
Abstract: An Arc/Info coverage was prepared containing the watershed boundaries of the four largest peatland complexes in the St. Regis River Basin, located in northern New York State for the New York State Adirondack Park Agency (APA). The four wetlands were: Madawaska Wetland, Spring Pond Bog, Waverly Bog, and Osgood River Muskeg. Watershed boundaries were delineated using USGS National Aerial Photography Program 1:40000 scale color infrared aerial photos. For some wetlands, such as Osgood River Muskeg, flowing water bisected the wetland. In this case, it was decided that the detailed watersheds of the wetland should be delineated separately for each portion since their upslope contributing areas were different, even though the river they both flow into was the same. Watershed boundaries originated at the bog mat pour point, of which there could be many in the case of a raised peatland. The detailed watersheds of large wetlands were mapped independently by two people, compared and verified by a third, transferred to a 1:24,000-scale basemap and digitized.

Purpose: The final detailed watershed maps illustrated the hydrologic relationships between large wetlands and the surrounding landscape. Used as an overlay on other datasets to characterize watershed attributes, and for attribution of water quality data associated with peatland systems.

Supplemental Information: The data set was heads-up digitized using ArcView 3.2 from scanned and georeferenced bitmap images of photocopied United States Geological Survey (USGS) 1:24,000 anc 1:25,000 scale maps. The data were brought into Arc/Info v8.0 and built as a coverage with polygon topology. Labels were added to identify the wetland each watershed was associated with.

Data Quality Information

Attribute Accuracy
Attribute Accuracy Report: Polygon attributes consist of polygon ID#, area, perimeter, and associated wetland name.
Quantitative Attribute Accuracy Assessment
Attribute Accuracy Value: unknown
Attribute Accuracy Explanation: All feature attributes are believed to be correct.

Logical Consistency Report:
Completeness Report: Extensive quality assurance/quality control measures were taken for all steps of dataset creation. It is expected however, that because the watersheds were delineated from USGS topographic maps taped together (because some of the wetlands occurred at the edges or corners of the quads), some positional errors occurred. Identifiable errors will be corrected periodically or as needed.

Positional Accuracy
Horizontal Positional Accuracy
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report: RMS error thresholds were not an option in the creation of this dataset because it was heads-up digitized in ArcView.
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Explanation: No formal assessment conducted
Vertical Positional Accuracy Report: 1:24000 scale and 1:25000 scale USGS topographic standards.

Source Contribution: Watersheds were transferred to these maps from mylar aerial photo overlays, and then digitized from these maps.

Process Step
Process Description: The two sets of watershed delineations were reconciled by a third individual overlaying the two mylars and choosing the watershed boundary line that seemed most appropriate between the two. Most differences occurred in areas of flat areas with low topographic relief.
Source Used Citation Abbreviation: WS-photodelin
Source Produced Citation Abbreviation: WS-photodelin-ck
Process Step
Process Description: Once reconciled, the watershed boundaries were transferred on unfolded topographic maps using a Bausch & Lomb Zoom Transfer Scope. The watershed boundaries were digitized from these final maps using heads-up digitizing in ArcView 3.2.
Source Used Citation Abbreviation: WS-photodelin-ck
Source Produced Citation Abbreviation: WSquads
Process Step
Process Description: The following steps were repeated for each of the 4 watersheds in the watershed:
  1. Create an ascii file with 4 tics (of any coordinate system, later they were all rectified to UTM, NAD27 using Corpscon software) within the vicinity of each of the 4 wetlands in the study area.
    Source Used Citation Abbreviation: WSquads
    Source Produced Citation Abbreviation: wtlnd-tic
    Process Step
    Process Description:
  2. Scan maps as bitmap images and georeference in ArcView using IMAGEGEOREF.AVX (created by George Raber, 1999). Align tics on scanned image with those from the ascii text file (ArcView event theme).
Source Used Citation Abbreviation: WSquads, wtlnd-tic
    Source Produced Citation Abbreviation: ws-img-georef
    Process Step
    Process Description:
  3. Digitize watershed boundaries from topographic quadrangles using heads-up digitizing in ArcView. 4 shapefile themes are created, one for each wetland watershed.
Source Used Citation Abbreviation: WSquads, ws-img-georef
    Source Produced Citation Abbreviation: WS-shp
Process Step
Process Description: Bring 4 shapefiles into ArcInfo. BUILD coverages. Union coverages. Build unioned coverage to create one coverage with all four wetland watersheds called LGWTLND_SHEDS.
Source Used Citation Abbreviation: WS-shp
Source Produced Citation Abbreviation: WS-co
Process Step
Process Description: Add field WETLAND to the LGWTLND_SHEDS.PAT to distinguish which wetland each watershed is associated with.
