Abstract: Spatial data containing the general soil distribution of the Adirondack Park, New York State.

Purpose: The spatial data layer was produced in 1975 by the Adirondack Park Agency from County general soils maps which were prepared for the APA by the U.S.D.A. Soil Conservation Service as part of their assistance to county soil and water conservation districts in cooperation with Cornell University Agricultural Station.

Supplemental Information: The base map soils were plotted on was developed at 1:62500 by the State of New York Office of Planning Coordination. This soils map is referred to as the "Meso Soils Map". Park-wide, 131 map units or soil associations have been identified. The resolution or minimum mapping threshold of these units is 40 to 100 acres (16-40 ha). It is noted that there are some differences associated with matches across county boundaries.

Process Description: Digital conversion consisted of hand digitizing by APA staff of the twelve county base maps into an early version of Erdas software (ca. 1983). Erdas vector files (now lost) were converted to a 1-acre per pixel Erdas raster GIS file. SCS staff on assignment at the APA reviewed the park-wide data set for consistency. Gores between counties were filled in. In 1996, the Erdas file was converted to an Erdas Imagine file, and then to an Arc/Info grid data set, and then to a polygon coverage using "gridpoly". The only editing done to the polygon coverage included weeding out extra vertices from arcs. The "stair-step" shape of the arcs was not changed or generalized in this process.
