Description:

Abstract:

GIS coverages containing points representing colleges throughout New York State. SUNY, CUNY, independent, military, nursing, and proprietary institutions are included. Attributes include address, county, sector (e.g. SUNY, CUNY, private), level (2 year or 4 year), enrollment.

Purpose:

The database was created by the NYS Education Department. It was originally geocoded by the NYS Department of Transportation as part of a joint project between NYS Empire State Developement and Cornell University.

Supplemental_Information:

This data set is in d-base file, with x and y coordinates, or shape file format. The data set is located within zone 18 of the UTM grid/projection system (Zone 18 is extended to cover New York State entirely in a single grid zone). File is compressed (.zip). It was used as part of the NYS y2k planning project. Process_Description:

Originally geocoded by NYS Department of Transportation in 1998. Streetmap 2000 (an extension of ARCVIEW) was used to geocode the addresses. If Streetmap 2000 could not geocode an address, then the address was geocoded manually using NYSDOT 1:24,000 quadrangle maps. Attribute AV_Status: If AV_Status = M, then streetmap 2000 geocoded the address. If AV_Status = U, then Streetmap 2000 could not find the address, and the address was geocoded manually. Attribute Check: If check = 1, then the address was located manually. If check = 0, then the address could not be located manually. The State Library modified the data set in 1999, adding 1998 enrollment data and correcting some addresses, based on the NYS Education Department's "Institutional Directory: Colleges and Universities in NYS" (pub. Oct. 1998). DOT 1:24,000 raster quads were then used to locate and geocode any updated addresses. Attribute SEDUpdate: If the SEDUpdate value is 1, then the address was updated by the New York State Library. If the SEDUpdate value is 0, then the address was not updated during this process.
