Usage Notes:

  1. Development History:
    1. Hydrography source is USGS 1:24,000 Hydrography DLG Quadrangles.
      1. DLG source is USGS Blue Line Separates developed in 1941-1985 (USGS Quadrangle Maps). DLG data digitized and attributed by NYS-DEC DOW. DLG quality control by NYS-DEC DOW and US Geological Survey - National Mapping Division.
    2. Hydrography assembled, connectivity and flow direction checked / edited, and route systems added / attributed by NYS-DEC DOW.
  2. Each HUC Cataloging Unit consists of three ArcInfo coverages; a linear network coverage, a surface water coverage, and a wetland coverage. The name of each coverage indicates what HUC Cataloging Unit that coverage belongs to, and if it is the linear network coverage, surface water coverage, or wetland coverage for that particular HUC Cataloging Unit. See the next note for an explanation of the naming format.
  3. Each coverage is named using an eight character format consisting of one letter followed by seven numbers, as follows.
    1. The seven numbers represent the HUC Cataloging Unit code, minus the leading zero (each HUC Cataloging Unit in New York State begins with a zero, so it is not necessary to include it).
    2. The letter indicates which of the following the coverage contains for that particular HUC Cataloging Unit:
      1. linear network ("n")
      2. surface waters ("s")
      3. wetlands ("w")
    3. For example, the coverage n2020005 is the linear network coverage for the HUC Cataloging Unit 02020005 (the Schoharie Creek Cataloging Unit).
  4. The linear network coverages may contain arcs (lines) that cross without intersecting (no node at the point of intersection). These are not errors, but represent linear features that cross over or under each other without intersecting, e.g. an aqueduct crossing a stream.
  5. The linear network coverages contain a route subclass called STRMNAME (ROUTE.STRMNAME). The route system exists only on selected major streams at this time. The route system contains only one attribute at this time, the stream name.
  6. All Polygon (area) and Arc (line) attribute tables are attributed with DLG codes (see DLG Codes Explained). See DLG Codes Lookup for a list of DLG code meanings.
