The school districts in this coverage were digitized over a number of years from tax maps for those counties who had approved tax maps. Tax map scales varied from 1:600 to 1:9600 (or tax map scales varied from 1" = 50' to 1" = 800' ). The counties of Onondaga, Tompkins,Warren, Broome, Westchester, Rockland, Suffolk, and all 5 borroughs in NYC had no complete county approved tax maps so some or all of their boundaries have been taken from the 1992 TIGER files. Putnam County provided school district lines in digital format. Edgematching between the arcs digitized from tax maps and those from the TIGER files was done manually. Because of their accuracy, no tax map lines were moved. Arcs from the TIGER files were extended or otherwise manipulated to meet the more accuract tax map boundaries. The arc attributes will show a descriptive attribute to depict how they were manipulated. As more counties become digital or can provide approved tax maps, the TIGER arcs will be replaced by the more accurate tax map or digital boundaries.
The School District Income Verification project has made a methodology of updating the boundaries a yearly project. The school district superintendents are sent a paper map depicting their school district boundary in June/July of each year and are asked to verify the accurateness of the boundaries. When changes are made at the school district level, we then update our coverage.
