Abstract:

This datafile contains information on all public libraries and their branches in New York State, in dBase format. Attributes include name, physical street address, city, county, zip codes, library system, latitude and longitude in decimal degrees, and New York State Senate and Assembly districts in which libraries are located.

Purpose:

Dataset was created to provide accurate point locations for public libraries for use in geographic information systems, together with current attribute data to aid in identifying and characterizing all chartered public libraries within New York State.

Supplemental_Information:

Database was built from information supplied by the New York State Library's Division of Library Development. Locational information (x,y coordinates in decimal degrees) was added directly or calculated from a number of different sources, coded as a value in the "flag" field of the database as follows: 1=acquired from Equifax National Decision Systems in 1996; address-matched by supplier against TIGER files (1994?); 2=addressed-matched against TIGER files by New York State Library, using ArcView; 3=no matchable house number, placed in center of street segment by New York State Library, using zip code boundaries, TIGER place files or GNIS point coordinates for populated places to aid in placement; 4=assigned to GNIS coordinates or placed in TIGER entity according to estimation of location, lacking precise information; 5=coordinates supplied by NYS Office of Real Property Services; 6=coordinates supplied by Queens Borough Public Library (for libraries in Queens County only).
