As of the Process Date, all public roads listed in NYSDOT’s Local Highway Inventory or named on published source maps are shown. Linework features are attributed with: feature level; category; type; primary, secondary, and tertiary route numbers; name of the road. The road name and route attributes included on the linework were originally coded as part of the Centralized Local Accident Surveillance System (CLASS) project and were not updated during the County Base Mapping program. Some of these attributes may be missing or obsolete. Likewise, the CLASS road name annotation layer (ANNOTATION.NAME) that is included has not been updated. Updated road names (included as annotation) for major connecting roads can be found in the corresponding county Names Files. Point features include cul-de-sacs, toll plazas, rest areas, tourist information centers, and bus terminals. The point features are attributed with feature level and type.

Process_Description:

The original source of the file was produced as part of NYSDOT's Centralized Local Accident Surveillance System (CLASS) project, compiled during the late 1970's and early 1980's. All public roads were digitized from the most recent 1:24,000 scale NYSDOT quadrangle maps available at that time. Approximate locations of additional roads named on source maps were also added to the file. Official road names and route numbers were coded to the lines after they were digitized. Limited updates involving new roads and/or attributes may have been added to the file through 1991. The vector road linework from the 1980 CLASS project served as the base for the updated County Base Map Roads File. In 1993 the CADD file was converted to a GIS file. Positional corrections and new alignments from newly completed NYSDOT 1:24,000 scale Quadrangle Mapping were incorporated. All alignments in the Roads File were appropriately classified based on road jurisdiction and type. NYSDOT quadrangles were used verify 1:24,000 scale positional accuracy of all interstate, federal, state, county, and connecting local road alignments. The file was also topologically corrected. Points were placed locating toll and custom plazas, rest areas, tourist information centers, and bus terminals.
