New Version of the Shared Adirondack Park GIS CD is underway
The Adirondack Park Agency and Adirondack GIS Users Group are embarking
on an update to the Shared Adirondack Park GIS CD and want to make
it bigger and better than ever. We would like your help with the
following:
- Cooperative Academic Cartographic Showcase. We would like to
highlight the work of regional university students by providing
ArcReader/PDF thematic maps of various datasets on the CD. Students
under the direction of academic staff will determine the best
scale, layout, color scheme, data layer combination, and other
cartographic elements to display the data from the CD. We are
willing and interested to offer advice, but we would like this
to be a student-driven exercise. All maps created by the students
from the various institutions will be featured on the CD. Some
ideas for map themes include: wetlands, local zoning, landcover,
wildlife, cultural, recreation, census, soils, elevation.
- Submit your original datasets with metadata. The Shared GIS
CD serves as a repository and a snapshot in time for GIS data
from academic research projects that may otherwise go unknown.
We would like to include as much spatial Adirondack research data
as possible on this version of the CD, both Park-wide and localized
GIS data. See the categories on the current CD for ideas (http://www.apa.ny.gov/gis/shared/htmlpages/data.html),
or suggest a new category name to add your data to.
- Student interns. We need interns to help convert datasets to
a multi-platform file type, re-project data, complete metadata,
create the GUI on the CD, and more. We have short and long-term
projects that students could work on during holiday breaks or
for internship credit during the academic year.
